What is the right order for spring cleaning?
Walk through the home and sort issues into three groups: discard or donate, repair, and clean. Cleaning will not mend a cracked seal or restore a worn floor finish. Clear surfaces, remove dust from high to low, clean wet areas and finish with vacuuming and floors.
A common mistake is washing the entry before boots, mats and storage bins are moved. Save that floor for the last pass through the home. If someone else is cleaning, say which objects may be moved and which must stay in place.
How do you handle salt, grit and meltwater at the entrance?
Remove dry grit before using a damp cloth. Check a rug's care label and vacuum the edges slowly, where sand gathers. On wood or stone, do not soak a white mark; test a finish-compatible product in a discreet spot. A mark that remains after drying may be damage to the material.
Empty and wash boot trays, clean under the doormat and inspect the joint where the threshold meets the baseboard. These small spots often explain why grit reappears just after cleaning.
Which tasks belong in a deeper seasonal clean?
Cabinet tops, baseboards, reachable radiators, window sills, doors and washable textiles can be useful additions. Oven and refrigerator interiors, cabinet interiors and windows should be agreed separately because each changes the time required. For windows, distinguish indoor from outdoor glass.
A room-by-room list tells a provider more than a package called “spring cleaning.” Name your priorities and desired result. If the budget is tight, start with the entry, kitchen and bathroom, then schedule the remaining work.
What should you do with old products under the sink?
Check labels and container condition. Do not pour leftovers into one bottle or mix products to save space. Health Canada advises keeping chemicals in their original containers and following their instructions.
For hazardous cleaners you no longer need, the City of Montreal directs residents to an ecocentre rather than household garbage or drains. Check drop-off conditions before travelling. Do not assume chemical disposal is included in an ordinary cleaning quote.
How do you request help with a clear scope?
Send the approximate area, rooms, priorities, photos of demanding spots and preferred date. Say whether cupboards will be empty, textiles removed and windows reachable from indoors. A provider can then estimate time from the real condition rather than a seasonal label.
Example: “Two-bedroom apartment in Verdun, salt marks at the entry, kitchen and bathroom first, baseboards and sills included. Price indoor windows and oven separately. I will move the rug and fragile items before the visit.” Confirm the price, extras, access and limits in writing.
