Where should you start when pet hair returns every day?
Start where the animal sleeps, walks and rubs against furniture. Lift fur from cushions and washable throws, vacuum edges and baseboards, then finish with the floor. An upholstery attachment or suitable brush is usually more useful on a sofa than a wet cloth that pushes hair into the fabric.
A single visit cannot keep a shedding cat or dog from leaving more fur tomorrow. Decide which surfaces need an initial reset and which belong in a repeat cleaning plan.
- Pet bedding, throws and cushions washed according to their labels
- Sofa, accessible space under furniture and rugs
- Baseboards, corners, reachable vents and thresholds
- Floors vacuumed before damp mopping
Pet odour: find the source before adding fragrance
A lingering smell may come from a throw, rug, litter area or an old accident under furniture. Inspect nearby surfaces and distinguish a fresh surface mark from liquid that has entered carpet backing or flooring. Fragrance may cover a smell for a few hours; it will not remove material trapped below the surface.
For a recent accident, absorb it without spreading it, then use a product compatible with the material and its care instructions. Do not soak a wood floor or scrub an unknown textile. If the smell returns after drying, mention it before the quote. The material may need specialist treatment or repair.
How do you keep a pet safe during a cleaning visit?
Set up a quiet room with water and suitable access before the cleaner arrives. Tell them if your pet fears the vacuum, may slip through an open door or follows a medication routine. Close and label any products you provide, and keep buckets and used cloths out of reach.
Health Canada advises reading product labels, never mixing household chemicals and storing them away from children and pets. Follow the label and wait until a treated area is safe to re-enter.
What details belong in a pet-home cleaning request?
The number of animals alone does not describe the job. List the actual surfaces: a thick rug, two fabric sofas and stairs call for different work than a condo with hard floors. Say whether the cleaner should touch the litter box, food bowls or pet bedding. Many owners prefer to handle those themselves.
Copy this scope into a request: “Two-bedroom condo, one cat, fur concentrated on the sofa and living-room rug. Please quote upholstery and baseboard vacuuming. I will handle the litter box. Low-fragrance products preferred, subject to confirmation. Parking and access: [details].” Add a photo of difficult areas and ask what is included, extra or excluded.
When is ordinary housekeeping the wrong service?
Pest infestation, extensive mould, biological contamination, water damage or an odour embedded in building materials falls outside routine home cleaning. Describe the problem and find an appropriate specialist before booking ordinary surface cleaning.
For a repeat visit, judge the agreed work: upholstery vacuumed, fur removed from reachable edges and surfaces left dry. Those checks are more useful than a vague promise of complete deodorizing.
